Who are we?
Melanated Consciousness evolved from a passion to connect with like-minded Black and Brown folx having psychedelic experiences. It was created by Black Queer Womxn, who in various ways, have made sacred medicines a part of their practice for healing and transformation.
Why BIPOC communities?
Representation.
As Black folx and co-creators of this organization, we spent time in many psychedelic spaces feeling detached and disconnected. We weren’t always able to fully articulate why it was difficult to be vulnerable in predominately white ceremonial spaces. Through a series of challenging conversations with each other that expanded to other Black and Brown folx in the psychedelic community, we realized why. Healing from generational and racial trauma requires a level of vulnerability we all wanted to experience in the safety and community of folx who look like us.
We are constantly engaging in conversations with Black and Brown folx who have been wounded by large and small blows from discrimination accumulated over a lifetime. Many are fearful of psychedelic medicine and the vulnerability that comes with being in an altered state of consciousness.
We’re also acutely aware that psychedelic spaces are not exempt from the harmful and violent impact of colonization. These medicines originate from the ancestral and cultural homelands of BIPOC communities and they are our birthright. Our hope is to create safer spaces (for us, by us) to connect, heal, empower, and build community together.
